Assumption Inventory
Workshop
Success comes from challenging assumptions
The most successful startups in the last years have succeeded by challenging long held industry assumptions. That Uber and Airbnb can rise to the top of their industry without owning any real estate or cars, is a testament to their capacity to challenge assumptions.
Traditional companies can maintain success by developing loyalty with their stakeholders, witness the intense customer and employee loyalty or Nordstrums and Southwest, which has lifted these companies into the top of their class. The capacity to truly connect with stakeholders comes from an openness to challenging assumptions about people and getting to know them and developing authentic relationships. We know we can't maintain a healthy relationship with anyone in our lives if we hold false assumptions about them.
Success on an individual level is buoyed the capacity to challenge ones own personal assumptions. The heroes journey is about challenging limiting beliefs to find the inner resources to save the day. Negative assumptions are the scourge of one's self esteem and confidence. Had Oprah bought into prevailing assumptions about her class, gender and race, we would not know her by her first name!
Challenging Assumptions: When to do it?
False assumptions are insipid. They are often reinforced by our communities and society. We often hold them without consciously knowing it. Fortunately our bodies are smarter. When we are buying into a false assumption, our bodies feel dis-ease. Stress is our bodies reaction to a false assumption.
This place of stress is the perfect place to question assumptions.
Challenging Assumptions: The Tool
The Challenging Assumption workshop was created to teach this fundamental skill.
This process happens in two parts.
First, the Assumption Inventory worksheet is used to identifying stressful assumptions. Once uncovered, these assumptions can then be questioned through The Work of Byron Katie.. This inquiry method has been validated in the business and personal development world, and is powerful, precise and reliable.
Once questioned, our confusion dissolves and we find ourselves in the inspired space that drew us to our professions the first place. We reconnect with our passion, creativity and connection.
Challenging Assumptions Curriculum
Our curriculum will teach participants how to uncover their underlying assumptions and question them. This process is simple but not easy. Far from being a mantra or idea, this is a revolutionary way of using our minds. Like any skill, it takes time for integration. The results deepen with practice.
This is best learned in teams of 6-12. Members learn to facilitate each other through the process, fostering team cohesion and mutual understanding.
Participants should expect
1. A greater ability to identify and understand underlying assumptions
2. Learn a practical skill in how to dismantle these assumptions
3. An increased capacity to be authentic
4. An improved morale and sense of connectedness amongst the learning cohort
5. A greater sense of ease in their professional and personal lives
6. A greater sense of engagement in the workplace
Components
I. Live Group Sessions:2 Day retreat off site for 6-10 team members at both the beginning and and again at 8 weeks.
II. Individual Coaching Sessions:
Weekly 1-hour coaching session with each of the members via Teleconferencing. These sessions would focus on practice of the methods, with the coach facilitating the participant,.
III. Partner Work
Team members will be partnered weekly and will facilitate each other through the process. This will allow participants to serve both as client and facilitator The main objective of this component is to lay the foundation for self-sustainment and independence in facilitation in order to fully incorporate the method into the team and the organization.
IV. Evaluation and Results:
Our evaluation and assessment tools have been designed and developed especially to measure the impact of The Work both at an individual and team levels within the organization. Our instruments measure the key abilities that we have identified as the main attributes developed when we integrate The Work into our lives such as enthusiasm, flexibility, receptivity, appreciation, courage, presence, trust, equitability, respectfulness, responsibility, openness, commitment, patience, clarity and receptivity.
OFFERINGS
Physicians
"Doctor Patriquin was a hit! Her combination of scientific credibility, kindness, and sense of humor, totally engaged our department, from the residents to the senior staff. She presents and practices methods of stress reduction in a unique and engaging way. We returned to work refreshed and eager to bring our new mindset to work."
Given the highly stressful nature of medical work, it is paramount that physicians care for their minds in a way that will allow them to weather the storm. Although scientifically validated to improve physician well being, decrease burnout and increase compassion in physicians, few doctors care for themselves in a way they would prescribe to their patients.
Executives
"Lara was invited to speak at our annual executive meeting. Her insight into the workings of the brain drew people in immediately. Her credibility as a scientist invited our team in. Her radiant personality kept their attention! They have asked for more training!"
The qualities of a true leader such as self-awareness, confidence, and intuition are trainable. The practices of inquiry and mindfulness remove the obstacles to courageous leadership. As the fear-based elements of an executives narrative dissolve, courageous leadership evolves.
Organizations
"Lara meets her audience where they are. She was able to get the attention of our troops and make them understand the importance of mindfulness and self-awareness, not only to improve their own well being but to better serve their country." Mylene Huyn
Whether it be in in the military, scientific laboratories or schools, the health, and morale of a group is dependent on healthy minds Moreover, our ability to interact and communicate effectively is paramount to serving our mission. organizational training works on 1) developing healthy minds through transformational inquiry and mindfulness training and 2) using these tools as a platform for communication.
Using this combination within a team increases its value exponentially. Team effectiveness skyrockets as members learn to drop the baggage associated with each other and develop trust.
